HealthOne Gulgong
HealthOne Gulgong, in the Greater Western Area Health Service (GWAHS), is currently under development, with the extension and refurbishment of the existing Gulgong Community Health Service. The new service will integrate community and allied health services with general practice services that are currently located in the town centre.
Location and demographics
The township of Gulgong is located in the Central West region of New South Wales, within the Mid-Western Regional Local Government Area (LGA), approximately 300 kms north-west of Sydney, 28 kms north of Mudgee and 103 kms south-east of Dubbo. A former nineteenth century gold-rush town, much of the nineteenth century town character remains, contributing to its appeal as a tourist destination. Local industries include wine production, wool, wheat farming, and coal mining.
The Mid-Western Regional LGA has a population of 22,021 people. The Gulgong catchment area has been determined by historic and existing health service utilisation patterns and is estimated as comprising 4,743 people, representing 22.5% of the Mid-Western Regional LGA population. The 2006 Census data indicates that the Aboriginal population of the Gulgong catchment area represents 3.2 % of the total population. People aged 65 and older comprise 15.9% of the local population, higher than the NSW average of 13.8%.
HealthOne Gulgong will provide primary health care services to Gulgong and its surrounding villages, including Ulan, Goolma and Birrawa.
