HealthOne Quirindi
Planning is well underway for the capital development of HealthOne Quirindi on the Quirindi Hospital site, with completion anticipated in mid-2011.
The Quirindi location and community
-
Quirindi is a small rural community located 62 kms (1 hour by road) south west of Tamworth and 271 kms (3 hours) from Newcastle.
-
HealthOne Quirindi will service the catchment encompassed by the Liverpool Plains Local Government Area with a population of 7,540 (2006 ABS Census).
-
At 2006, 15% of the population was under 15, while 18% were over 65. Projections show that these groups are likely to remain relatively stable over the coming years.
-
Several proposed coal mining projects are likely to propel population growth in the area. Nearby Werris Creek has seen an increase in train drivers and train / track maintenance workers due to increased movement of coal trains, while the Council is constructing additional infrastructure in anticipation of the population increase.
-
The Quirindi community comprises of a high number of people who are socially and economically disadvantaged, with high levels of unemployment, early school leaving and lack of educational qualifications. The area also has a high Aboriginal population comprising 9.5% of the total population at the 2006 Census in comparison to the 2.2% state average.
-
Health priority areas are chronic disease (specifically cardiovascular, diabetes, respiratory and cancer), aged care, Aboriginal health, maternal health, child health, mental health and injury prevention.
