Summary given by Janet Anderson

Janet Anderson referred to the work of UK business planning consultant John Argenti. Argenti proposes that strategic planning is like an elephant hunt and it is essential to find the "strategic elephants" - the six big issues facing a particular organisation. He believes if you get these big issues right, the smaller day to day issues will fall into perspective. If you don't get the big issues right the smaller issues will be the least of your worries.

Six elephants

Janet proposed six "strategic elephants" for HealthOne NSW:

  1. Models of service delivery (inc. model of care, organisation of services)
  2. Funding arrangements (eg. business arrangements)
  3. Governance (eg. corporate, clinical)
  4. Human capital (eg. numbers of staff, skill level and mix, education, training and development)
  5. Infrastructure (eg. I&CT, physical facilities, capital works)
  6. Community and consumer engagement

The workshop offered the opportunity to pause and look at the challenges and successes encountered by HealthOne NSW partners; to reflect on and learn from our experiences and then to look enthusiastically to the future.    All those involved in HealthOne NSW are on a journey, and there are more people joining us all the time.  As with all journeys, there are bound to be ups and downs, rewards and frustrations along the way.  What is vital is that we maintain our focus on the strategic elephants and, through our key decisions and actions, constantly reaffirm our strong commitment to this new way of delivering health care.
