Diphtheria

Diphtheria is a potentially fatal bacterial infection that usually affects the nose and throat. It is very uncommon in Australia but can reemerge when immunisation rates are low.

Notification

Diphtheria is a notifiable disease in NSW and must be reported by phone as soon as possible after diagnosis.
 
Doctors, Hospitals and laboratories must notify the local Public Health Unit (PHU).
 
Select your local PHU  to obtain the correct notification form and notify your local PHU.
