Food-borne illness

Foodborne disease (or food poisoning) results from consuming contaminated food or drink.

Notification

Foodborne illness is a notifiable condition. Suspected foodborne illness in two or more related cases is to be notified to PHUs within 24 hours of diagnosis by:

  • Hospital CEOs (or delegates) (ideal reporting by telephone)
  • Medical practitioners (ideal reporting by telephone)
  • The NSW Food Authority.
