Legionnaires' disease

Legionnaires' disease is an infection of the lungs (pneumonia) caused by Legionella bacteria. One type of the bacterium lives in water and outbreaks occasionally occur linked to mist from contaminated cooling towers. Another type lives in soils and potting mix.

Notification

Legionnaires' disease is a hospital and laboratory notifiable disease in NSW and must be reported to the local Public Health Unit (PHU) by phone as soon as possible after diagnosis.
