Malaria
Malaria
Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease caused by a parasite. People with malaria often experience fever, chills, and flu-like illness. Left untreated, they may develop severe complications and die. The last major outbreak of malaria in Australia occurred at the end of World War II. But it was not until 1981 that Australia was officially declared malaria-free by the World Health Organization. Even so, there are about a thousand reported cases of malaria in Australia each year, and one death a year. However, the vast majority of these people contracted the disease overseas.
