Q Fever

Q fever

Q fever is caused by the bacterium Coxiella burnetii. The disease is spread to humans through contact with dust or droplets contaminated with bacteria from animals including cattle, sheep or goats. Q fever vaccine is recommended for workers in livestock, agriculture, and meat industries.

Notification

Q fever is a laboratory notifiable disease in NSW and must be reported to the local Public Health Unit (PHU) as soon as possible after diagnosis.
