How to extend a Declared Area of Need Position

1.  Read the Area of Need Assessment Criteria

2.  Gather evidence of labour market testing to the level required by the criteria.

Note: For staff specialist psychiatry positions in rural and metropolitan Area Health Services, labour market testing is covered by the collective recruitment strategy undertaken by the Rural Psychiatry Project of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, NSW Branch.

3. Get stakeholder support as required by the criteria

4. Complete an application form and check list to extend an Area of Need medical position

5. Prepare a copy of a position description in the template required by the NSW Medical Board.

 (Employers should take into account the NSW Medical Board Supervision Guidelines for Area of Need Doctors prior to completing the position description).

6. Submit the application form and checklist, evidence of labour market testing, letters of support from stakeholders, proof of DWS classification or PADWS and a copy of the position description to:
