Area of Need Program Vacancies

Area of Need positions are usually located in rural and remote parts of New South Wales where there is limited access to medical services and other alternative services. However, Area of Need status is also granted to hospital-based general and specialist positions in regional centres.

An Area of Need position is a term that applies to a medical position (not a geographical location) with a specific category of medical registration under the Medical Practice Act 1992.

There are three main categories of Area of Need positions:

  • General Practitioner
  • Specialist & Hospital non-Specialist

General Practitioner

More than 75% of general practitioner positions are located in rural localities, with the remainder in regional and outer metropolitan areas.

Most of the GP positions are in the private sector. However, for ease of reference, we have listed our current general practitioner vacancies within the geographical boundaries of the Area Health Services.

See About the NSW Area Health Services for information about each Area Health Service, its geography, climate, and social and cultural happenings.

For more information on rural general practice, visit the NSW Rural Doctors Network website.

Specialist & Hospital non-Specialist

Most specialist and hospital non-specialist positions are in rural localities, followed by regional New South Wales, with the remainder in the outer metropolitan areas. The majority are in the public sector.
