PGY 1

Intern

Allocated to a hospital (Primary Allocation Hospital) by the Institute of Medical Education and Training (IMET).

Conditional Registration requiring supervision.

Undertakes 5 x 10-12 week terms per year.

PGY 2

Resident
RMO1

Second generalist year IMET sets quotas for PGY2s.

Required to undertake 5 x 10-12 week terms per year.

PGY3-5

Unstreamed Resident
or
Senior Resident 
or
Registrar

Generalist hospital doctors who may be waiting to go on to a training program or a Career Medical Officer considering posts.

PGY3+

Streamed Senior Resident
or
Registrar

In a vocational training program, specialising in a particular specialty area.

Linked with a medical College training program.

Senior Registrar

In a specialist training program, having completed part one of the training program and examination requirements.

Postgraduate Fellow

Completed specialist training examinations.

Required to complete time served before completing fellowship requirements.

Staff specialist
or
Visiting Medical Officer (VMO)
or
Honorary Medical Officer (HMO)

Fellow

Completed all specialist training, eligible to work as a specialist.
