What is Abuse?

Abuse is anything that individuals or others do or fail to do that harms children or damages their prospects of a safe and healthy development into adulthood.

This includes:

Physical abuse

  • hitting
  • burning
  • shaking
  • bruising

Emotional abuse

  • not showing love or warmth or attention to children
  • yelling at children
  • picking on children
  • being emotionally unavailable to children

Neglect

  • Not giving children adequate diet
  • Not providing medical care and attention
  • Inadequate clothing
  • Lack of supervision
  • Not showing love

Sexual abuse

  • Incest
  • Rape
  • Fondling
  • Flashing
  • Pornography
  • Any sexual activity with children

Exposure to Domestic violence

  • letting children see violence
  • letting children witness the results of violence
