NSW Health Patient Survey

NSW Health Patient Survey

The NSW Health Patient Survey has been developed to gain information from Patients and Carers across NSW about their experiences with health care services and is only one of several strategies being used by NSW Health to gain a complete picture of Patient and Carer experience.

NSW Health has contracted Ipsos Australia Pty Ltd to conduct a statewide survey of NSW patients for the next 3 years and to deliver high level reports to NSW Health and detailed, actionable reports to health services.

Each year over 200,000 surveys will be mailed to patients in NSW who received inpatient and non-inpatient services across ten survey categories.

The surveys ask questions about all of the dimensions of care that research shows patients value, including:

  • Access to care
  • Coordination of care
  • Patients' preferences
  • Information and education
  • Physical comfort
  • Emotional support
  • Family and friends
  • Continuity of care and transition after discharge

Participating Public Health Organisations include the 8 Area Health Services and Children's Hospital Westmead. NSW Justice Health and the NSW Ambulance Service carry out separate customer survey and benchmarking activities with other like-organisations.

The NSW Health 2007 Patient Survey Report has now been published. The report summarises statewide findings with over 70,000 patient responses to the survey.

NSW Health is working collaboratively with the Cancer Institute NSW extending the scope of the NSW Health Patient Survey to include a cancer journey survey. The Cancer Care Survey is conducted at 16 nominated sites across NSW and captures in detail the experience of cancer patients. The NSW Health Cancer Services - Patient Survey 2007 Report has now been published.
