Junior Medical Officers
The term Junior Medical Officer (JMO) typically includes Interns, Residents, Registrars and Senior Registrars. JMOs in NSW have the opportunity to work in a variety of well supported clinical environments while furthering training as a doctor.
NSW offers quality specialist training in all medical specialities, including anaesthesia, dermatology, emergency medicine, intensive care, obstetrics and gynaecology, ophthalmology, pathology, adult medicine, paediatrics, occupational medicine, public health, rehabilitation medicine, psychiatry, radiology, radiation oncology and surgery.
NSW invests substantially in medical education and training to support doctors working and training in the public health system. This investment has resulted in development of specialist training networks, dedicated Directors of Training, Education Support Officers and establishment of the NSW Institute of Medical Education and Training (IMET).
IMET supports Area Health Services and other public health organisations that control public hospitals in relation to postgraduate specialist medical education systems in NSW Specialist Training Networks have been established for basic physician, basic and advanced psychiatry, basic surgical, cardiology and paediatrics training.
Doctors are able to rotate through a number of different clinical settings and have the opportunity to experience rural clinical practice and rural life while undertaking specialist training. By completing double the minimum rural placement per year trainees are able eligible to apply for a Rural Scholarship Fund.
