Note: The HREC covering Murrumbidgee and Southern NSW Local Health Districts has suspended all activity in relation to ethical review of studies taking place in its jurisdiction. Investigators wishing to undertake a single centre study in either Murrumbidgee or Southern NSW Local Health Districts can submit their HREC application to any Lead HREC in NSW. A Lead HREC is a HREC accredited by the NSW Ministry of Health to conduct the single ethical and scientific review of multi-centre research projects taking place within NSW Health. A lead HREC in ‘clinical' research means that the HREC has been accredited as a lead HREC in the area of clinical trials/interventional clinical research. A lead HREC in ‘general’ research means that the HREC has been accredited to review general research, which includes: epidemiological research; population health research; health services research; qualitative research; clinical research of a non-interventional nature and other general categories of research.
A Certified HREC is one that is hosted by an institution that has been certified by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) to participate in the national approach to single ethical review (note this initiative is likely to commence in the second half of 2012). Certification details can be accessed through the NHMRC Human Research Ethics Portal.
A HREC participating in the Interstate Mutual Acceptance initiative is a Certified HREC that has been certified to review clinical trials. Certification details can be accessed through the NHMRC Human Research Ethics Portal.
