FAQ: Undertaking human research in NSW Public Health Organisations

What type of approval do I need?

All human research that takes place in NSW Public Health Organisations must be authorised by the Chief Executive or their delegate before commencement. You must receive a written notification of authorisation before commencing your project. Authorisation will only be provided once:
(i) the research project has been reviewed and approved by a HREC that is constituted and operates in accordance with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2007); and
(ii) the research project has been reviewed by the Public Health Organisation through a process of site specific assessment or access request review.

Human research taking place in NSW Public Health Organisation means research:
(i) conducted at sites under the control of Public Health Organisations; and/or
(ii) involving participants, tissue or data accessed through Public Health Organisations.
