Enhancing the Effect of Employment by Psychosocial Interventions for People with Severe Mental Illness

Employment is an important aspect of the recovery of people with severe mental illness (SMI). It provides opportunities for skills development, social contacts and participation in the community. Unfortunately, only a few people with SMI are employed in competitive jobs. Dr Tsang's workshop will review employment barriers for people with SMI and existing services for this population. Although supported (competitive) employment has been found to be successful in helping our clients to secure employment, their job tenure is usually short. The workshop will discuss how the problem of job tenure may be improved with skills training and other psychosocial interventions by means of an Integrated Supported Employment model (ISE). The theories, implementation protocol, case management techniques and evidence base on the enhanced version of supported employment will be covered. Participants will be required to participate in case discussions and role plays which help to build up the case management skills necessary for the implementation of ISE.
