The following advice is emphasised:
- Take note that paracetamol is available in different strengths in liquid and tablet form, and care should be taken when reading the label to ensure appropriate use.
- Advice should be sought from a pharmacist, registered nurse, or doctor to clarify the label instructions, if necessary.
- The appropriate dose of paracetamol will depend on the age, weight, and body fat on an individual and needs to be reduced for people who are overweight.
- The recommended dose for adults and children aged 12 years and over is 500-1000mg every four to six hours, if necessary. No more than four grams should be taken in any 24 hour period.
- For children under 12 years of age, the recommended dose is 15mg/kg, unless overweight, with no more than four doses being given in any 24 hour period.
- Do not use paracetamol for more than 48 hours without seeking medical advice. Paracetamol can be safely taken for longer than 48 hours if there is adequate medical review.
- If more than the recommended dose is accidentally taken, prompt treatment must be sought because of the delayed toxic effect on the liver, even if it looks like there has been no adverse effect.
- Paracetamol should only be used to treat a fever over 38 degrees centigrade or pain.
- Do not use paracetamol for a mild fever, gastroenteritis, or as a sedative, especially in children.
