Multidisciplinary Burn Education
The NSW Severe Burn Injury Service (SBIS) is dedicated to providing education for clinicians and health professionals both within the Service, and in outlying areas. We are able to provide education and training on all aspects of burn care, from initial first aid, assessment and management, through wound management, dressing selection and application, and to short and long term physical, nutritional, speech and psychosocial rehabilitation. We also provide information on appropriate referral to specialist units, or local management.
We have conducted comprehensive courses in Wagga, Rozelle, Ryde, Dubbo, Orange, Goulburn, Nth Ryde, Wollongong, Wyong and Port Macquarie. Participants have included hospital medical personnel, general practitioners, registered and enrolled nurses, ambulance and paramedic officers and therapists.
The courses have been well received with positive feedback from participants. Some comments have included "These training sessions are excellent - would love to see them on a regular 6 monthly basis", "I feel a lot more confident after attending today", "Repeat sessions to enable other staff to hear about it first hand from 'experts'", "The service you have provided us is amazing, your flexibility in delivery was outstanding. You have opened up the doors of communication and sharing on this issue and for that and more we are very grateful", "Excellent - the more information we have the better - burns are such a difficult clinical problem and so all the input we can get is appreciated. Thankyou". These were day or half day programs delivered by multiple team members from NSW burn units; however opportunities exist for smaller sessions.
Individual lectures on burn patient assessment and management have been delivered both within a full day on topics such as trauma, critical patient management or wound management days, and as individual 'one off' lectures. These lectures have also been received favourably with comments such as "Was an excellent presentation and would be a valuable tool for all medical health practitioners", "A great review of burns patient. We don't have them very often, but always need to do over this form when it happens - well done", "I haven't had much education regarding burns and this session was the most helpful / educational. Excellent presentation".
The SBIS is happy to work with clinicians to tailor education to their needs. Contact the NSW Severe Burn Injury Service to coordinate and arrange education sessions.
