ACI NSW Statewide Burn Injury Service - Education and Courses

Burns Management Series 3 Day Short Course Royal North Shore Hospital

 26 - 28 October 2011

This 3 day course offer s a comprehensive and interactive learning experience. I t provides a multi-disciplinary focus of the management of the patient with a burn injury from the time of injury across the acute, rehabilitation and reconstructive phases. Long term issues, complications and current research will also be presented.

Under the topic headings, participants will gain both practical and theoretical knowledge which is relevant and applicable to every day practice. In addition to the broad topics listed there will also be:

Pathophysiology of Burns

First Aid and Transfer Guidelines

Burn depth Assessment

Calculating Total Body Surf ace Area Burnt

Emergency and Minor Burn Wound Management

Inhalation Injury

Chemical and Electrical Burns

Surgical Intervention

Cultured Skin and skin substitutes

In addition there will be a tour of the Severe Burn Injury Unit.

If you are a health professional who treats or manages patients with a burn injury at any stage from the time of injury onwards, then this course will enhance your ability to provide evidenced based and practical care through skill and knowledge development.

Presentations will be given from a variety of clinical experts with all information evidence based and clinically relevant. Some of the sessions are more hands on and interactive. A Burns survivor will also be talking to the group about their experiences.

Burn Rehabilitation Managment Series May 2012 dates to be announced

This 2 day series will be of interest to health professionals who have minimal experience or just beginning to work with people who have sustained a burn injury or are interested in this area of practice.

The two days will cover topics across the continuum of care, including pathophysiology of burn injuries, surgical & reconstructive operative treatment, with particular emphasis on; wound management, scar management, exercises, splinting, pain management, psychosocial management, nutrition, and swallowing and voice management.

There will be multidisciplinary practical sessions on the second day emphasising the collaborative nature of the MDT when working with severely burn injured patients

Multidisciplinary Burn Education

The NSW Statewide Burn Injury Service (SBIS) is dedicated to providing education for clinicians and health professionals both within the Service, and in outlying areas. We are able to provide education and training on all aspects of burn care, from initial first aid, assessment and management, through wound management, dressing selection and application, and to short and long term physical, nutritional, speech and psychosocial rehabilitation. We also provide information on appropriate referral to specialist units, or local management.

We have conducted comprehensive courses in Wagga, Rozelle, Ryde, Dubbo, Orange, Goulburn, Nth Ryde, Wollongong, Wyong and Port Macquarie. Participants have included hospital medical personnel, general practitioners, registered and enrolled nurses, ambulance and paramedic officers and therapists.

Courses

The courses have been well received with positive feedback from participants. Some comments have included "These training sessions are excellent - would love to see them on a regular 6 monthly basis", "I feel a lot more confident after attending today", "Repeat sessions to enable other staff to hear about it first hand from 'experts'", "The service you have provided us is amazing, your flexibility in delivery was outstanding. You have opened up the doors of communication and sharing on this issue and for that and more we are very grateful", "Excellent - the more information we have the better - burns are such a difficult clinical problem and so all the input we can get is appreciated. Thankyou". These were day or half day programs delivered by multiple team members from NSW burn units; however opportunities exist for smaller sessions.

Lecture

Individual lectures on burn patient assessment and management have been delivered both within a full day on topics such as trauma, critical patient management or wound management days, and as individual 'one off' lectures. These lectures have also been received favourably with comments such as "Was an excellent presentation and would be a valuable tool for all medical health practitioners", "A great review of burns patient. We don't have them very often, but always need to do over this form when it happens - well done", "I haven't had much education regarding burns and this session was the most helpful / educational. Excellent presentation".

The SBIS is happy to work with clinicians to tailor education to their needs. Contact the NSW Statewide Burn Injury Service to coordinate and arrange education sessions.

EMSB - Emergency Management of Severe Burns

The Australian and New Zealand Burn Association (ANZBA) runs an Emergency Management of Severe Burns Course (E.M.S.B.). It is designed for workers in the healthcare industry that would come into contact with burns victims. EMSB teaches how to Recognise, Assess and Transfer the severely burned patient.
