The GMCT Neurosurgery Network was established in June, 2001 following recommendations made by the Greater Metropolitan Services Implementation Group (GMSIG). Since its inception the Neurosurgery Network has established five clinical groups that span thirteen service delivery sites. The Network is governed by the Neurosurgery Network Executive Committee (NNEC).

Each of these clinical groups is actively represented on the NNEC by either medical, nursing and/or allied health professionals and consumer representatives. The NNEC plays an integral role in creating and maintaining effective relationships between the clinical groups through the transparent dissemination of information using members of the NNEC and affiliated working groups.

It is impossible to separate the primary focus of the Network from the over arching commitment of the GMCT. That is, an unwavering commitment to improving health care in NSW based on service delivery that responds to clinical need, patient safety, high quality service delivery, services that are planned by and for clinicians and consumers and most importantly, equity of access and outcome for patients who need neurosurgical services. The Neurosurgery Network has also developed collaborative relationships with the Clinical Excellence Commission and the different departments within NSW Health.

The Neurosurgery Network received historical funding for enhancement of services including the appointment of key staff, eg, data managers, case managers, nurse practitioners and the Network manager. A percentage of this funding was used to commission operating theatres and establish a neurosurgery service at Liverpool Hospital.
