What's New on the SSCIS website

New Publication

On the 10th January 2011 SSCIS was notified by the NSW Health Statewide Services Development Branch that the new Selected Specialty and Statewide Service Plan: Spinal Cord Injury is now available on the following link

http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/pubs/2010/spinal_injury.html

The Plan was developed over the past 5 years by NSW Health in collaboration with clinicians and stakeholders across the system, including Area Health Services; the state Spinal cord Injury Service (SSCIS); the Greater Metropolitan Clinical Taskforce (GMCT, now the Agency for Clinical Innovation (ACI); EnableNSW;  Northcott Disability Services; and the rehabilitation Studies Unit, University of Sydney.

The Plan outlines a comprehensive model of care that includes the following five phases:

1)      Immediate period following an acute event resulting in a suspected spinal cord injury

2)      Acute management

3)      Inpatient rehabilitation

4)      Community reintegration

5)      Ongoing care

However, the Plan focuses on the first three phases as being the more specialized elements and includes some aspects of ongoing care that will be supported by the statewide service.  The Plan identifies key interface points with the last two phases of care.
