Current Projects

1. Burn Rubber Burn

Developing an exercise program for people with established spinal cord injury. The project aims to describe how to deliver a safe exercise gymnasium program for people with a spinal cord injury to maximise cardiovascular fitness and to establish partnerships with gymnasiums who are able to assist people with established SCI access suitable equipment and supervision. This project has been made possible through funding provided by GMCT.

2. The SSCIS Psychosocial Project

Historically rehabilitation has focused on restoration of function, physical conditioning and mobility. It is becoming increasingly clear to clinicians, however, that an individual's psychological adjustment is a major determinant for successful rehabilitation outcomes and community reintegration. The SSCIS Psychosocial Steering Committee has been formed as a first step in the creation of a strategy to address the psychosocial needs of clients, carers and staff. The SSCIS Psychosocial Forum was held on the 6 December 2006 to provide an opportunity for spinal cord injury (SCI) specialist health professionals to examine current practice, existing service models and gaps, as well as ways of improving this aspect of clinical care from time of injury to discharge.

3. Clinical Practice Guidelines

The development of guidelines for the management and prevention of pressure ulcers - a GMCT funded project. This project was initiated to develop clinical practice guidelines for the prevention and management of skin related issues in the spinal cord injury population across the lifelong continuum of care. The guidelines will support clinical decision making from the time of acute spinal injury, through inpatient episodes and into community care.

This area of clinical practice has been targeted by the SSCIS as it has significant impacts on both individuals and on the health care system.

4. Medical Specialist Outreach Assistance Program (MSOAP)

The SSCIS is currently participating in the Commonwealth funded MSOAP. This program aims to provide up-skilling opportunities for rural clinicians, particularly general practitioners and for the provision of clinics in rural communities. The program is run in collaboration with the SSCIS Spinal Outreach Service Rural Education Program. Since late 2004, the SSCIS in partnership with rural colleagues has provided didactic education sessions to more than 320 rural clinicians and reviewed more than 90 clients.
