About this Website

This website consists of a series of learning modules and aims to provide the essential information required by health professionals to work with their clients. It provides a structured, client-focused and goal-orientated approach to clinical practice. Within the site there is a strong focus on the client at the centre of the systematic assessment and prescription process, on clinical reasoning and on teamwork. One key goal of the site is to assist health professionals to have the confidence and skill to know when to refer to, and consult with, specialist services and to understand the role of the equipment supplier within the prescribing team.

To optimise the learning experience, it is suggested that you progress through each module in numeric order.

Wheelchair and seating systems are highly engineered with rapidly changing technical advances, features and options. There are thousands of products and accessories in an ever-changing market. In developing this resource, the project team focused on developing the knowledge and skills required for effective clinical reasoning and analysis of products designs, rather than on providing detailed product information. For detailed product knowledge it is essential to keep abreast of change, and the commercial suppliers have comprehensive websites, product demonstrations and information to meet this need.

The web-based seating modules aim to:

  • provide accessible clinical knowledge for seating and wheeled mobility assessment and intervention to clinicians
  • improve clinicians' self-awareness of  their own competency in the area of seating and wheeled mobility
  • improve clinical reasoning and documentation of client needs and outcomes
  • prepare workshop participants and maximise hands-on learning opportunities

The SSCIS Seating and Wheeled Mobility website contains the following features:

  • Each module has aims, rationales, outcomes, key concepts and hyperlinks to more detailed or advanced resources
  • Downloads of sample assessment forms and prompt sheets: initial interview, MAT, body measurement and evaluation of wheeled mobility and seating systems
  • Teaching videos (internet access needed)
  • Downloads of handy tips, selected useful resources and practical ideas
  • Links to other useful resource material and other spinal or seating information websites (internet access needed)
  • Self-assessment quizzes or case studies with answers

The site includes a referral guide for NSW Health clinicians and downloadable resources and links to further education material and useful web sites. In order to access all features of the site, a media player and access to the internet are required. For clinicians in NSW most features are available via the NSW Health intranet.
