Module 5 - Evaluation of Seating and Wheeled Mobility Systems

Aim | Rationale | Outcomes

Aim

This module aims to describe the purpose and methodology used in evaluating and recording components of seating and wheeled mobility.

Rationale

A systematic record of seating and wheeled mobility systems enables the clinician to:

  • Compare the existing system to the person's seating and mobility requirements established in Modules 2-4
  • Identify technological features or specifications related to the client's needs
  • Identify patterns of wear and tear and maintenance issues with the existing system
  • Assess effectiveness - what works/does not work for the client
  • Identify possible trauma or pressure risks - e.g sharp edges, protruding parts, poor padding or "bottoming out"
  • Recognise the prioritisation of seating goals and urgency for intervention
  • Identify needs for prescription/modification
  • Document and confirm precise specifications established between the client and supplier for quotation and prescription phases
  • Improve accuracy and time efficiency in setting up the new system by using a detail record of the trial system

Outcomes

At the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • List the tools required for evaluating the seating and wheeled mobility system
  • Record relevant measurements of the system
  • Inspect and describe components of the system
  • Systematically summarise your findings to identify issues with the current system
