Module 10 - Power Mobility

Indications for power mobility assessment and interventions

  • clients with SCI undergoing rehabilitation and requiring power mobility as a mobility aid
  • clients unable to independently perform an effective weight shift and who require power seating functions as part of pressure ulcer prevention and management
  • significant functional limitations, postural asymmetry and deformity that prevent effective manual wheelchair mobility
  • significant weight loss or gain
  • a change in functional mobility status
  • a change in the ability to use the input or control devices to operate the power mobility device
  • upper limb pain impacting on the efficiency of wheeled propulsion
  • replacement of powered mobility
  • wheelchair safety concerns of client or carers

Types of power mobility interventions include:

  • adjustment of the current seating and power mobility
  • upgrading or replacement of components of current power mobility
  • new power mobility prescription and subsequent user and/or carer training.

Referral to the Spinal Seating Services is indicated for clients who:

  • have non-healing sitting-acquired or related pressure areas
  • have a history of recurrent pressure ulcers and related surgical interventions
  • have custom-fabricated products that require replacement
  • have complex postural and functional needs which commercial products are unable to meet 
  • are ventilator-dependent quadriplegics.
