This site contains important information on:
Mental health problems in children, adolescents and young people are
increasing in frequency and severity. One in five children and adolescents
are affected by mental health problems and disorders. For adolescents,
mental health problems are already as common as physical health problems,
such as asthma. Young people that are aged between 18-24 years have the
highest prevalence of mental disorders of any age group.
If we neglect the mental health needs of our children, adolescents and
young people, high social and economic costs may occur. These could include
distress for young people and their families, increased suicide risk,
increased drug and alcohol misuse and disruption to their psychological,
educational and social development. Unless we act early, mental health
problems in childhood and adolescence are more likely to lead to mental
disorders later in life.
To help families better understand and recognise mental health problems
in children, adolescents and young people, the NSW Health Department has
developed this Family Help Kit. It also provides information and contact
details on how and where to get help.
Promoting the mental health of children, adolescents and young people
is a high priority for the NSW Government. Working together with families
across NSW as a caring community will help prevent the distress caused
by mental health problems and disorders in families.
I hope you find this kit a valuable resource for you and your family,
particularly in times of need.
