AMIHS aims to decrease Aboriginal perinatal mortality by providing accessible, culturally appropriate maternity care programs for Aboriginal families across NSW.
AMIHS commenced in December 2000 with recurrent NSW Health funding. The Strategy includes:
- seven targeted antenatal/postnatal programs for Aboriginal women and infants across Greater Western, Hunter New England and North Coast Area Health Services, representing 20 Local Government Areas.
- a statewide Training and Support Program for midwives and Aboriginal health workers.
The final evaluation report provides the details about the remarkable outcomes from this program.
