Human Research Ethics Committees

The NSW Health Research Ethics Strategy supports and develops the network of Human Research Ethics Committees (HRECs) in NSW Health. The Strategy focuses on:

  • information sharing
  • education
  • policy development
  • mechanisms for the streamlining of processes
  • development and implementation of policies to manage emerging research ethics issues.

The role of the Human Research Ethics Committees (HRECs) is to protect the welfare and rights of research participants. HRECs are constituted and operate in accordance with the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) National Statement on Ethical conduct in Research Involving Humans.

There are about 60 HRECs in NSW, of which 23 HRECs (pdf,70 KB) serve the public health system. Lead HRECs (pdf, 28 KB).
