Area Health Advisory Councils

The Area Health Advisory Councils facilitate the involvement of health service providers, consumers and community members in the development of the Area Health Services' policies, plans and initiatives. Health Advisory Councils were established under the Health Services Act 1997 as a forum for the participation of clinicians and consumers in the development and delivery of health services.

Each of the eight Area Health Services (AHS) in NSW has an Area Health Advisory Council, as does The Childrens Hospital at Westmead. The Councils have specific roles and responsibilities assigned to them under the Act.

There are eight Area Health Advisory Councils:

Greater Southern Area Health Advisory Council

Greater Western Area Health Advisory Council

Hunter New England Area Health Advisory Council

North Coast Area Health Advisory Council

Northern Sydney Central Coast Area Health Advisory Council

South Eastern Sydney Illawarra Area Health Advisory Council

Sydney South West Area Health Advisory Council

Sydney West Area Health Advisory Council

There is also a Children's Hospital Advisory Council for the Children's Hospital at Westmead.

NSW Health Advisory Councils Convention - May 2009

To support Health Advisory Councils in their role, the NSW Department of Health hosted a Health Advisory Council Convention, held in Sydney on 28 May 2009.

Ninety participants from Health Advisory Councils across the state registered to participate in the convention.

Designed as a working convention, the program provided a forum for:

  • Consulting Health Advisory Councils on the implementation of Caring Together
  • Health Advisory Councils to undertake planning for the implementation of Caring Together
  • Identifying new ways to facilitate relationships between Health Advisory Councils, clinicians, consumers and AHS executives for improved performance.

The Convention Outcomes Report can be found here
