Mental Health Research Organisations

The NSW Centre for Rural and Remote Mental Health

The NSW Centre for Rural and Remote Mental Health is a major initiative of NSW Health and the University of Newcastle. Commencing in 2001, the CRRMH aims to improve the mental health of people in rural and remote communities through academic leadership, partnerships and achievements in research, education and service development and planning. The Centre works in close collaboration with rural Area Mental Health Services, rural communities and a wide range of organisations and agencies in the design and delivery of its programs.

Black Dog Institute

The Black Dog Institute is a not-for-profit, educational, research, clinical and community-oriented facility offering specialist expertise in depression and bipolar disorder.

The Institute is attached to the Prince of Wales Hospital and affiliated with the University of New South Wales.

Launched in February 2002, The Institute's mission is to advance the understanding, diagnosis and management of the mood disorders by continuously raising clinical, research, education and training standards. The Institute aims to improve the lives of those affected - and in turn - the lives of their families and friends.

The Institute’s organisational model has four key inter-dependent functions, as follows:

  • Research: to support and advance research into mood disorders
  • Clinical services: to raise clinical standards of diagnosing and managing mood disorders
  • Education: to provide expert education and training about mood disorders to Healthcare Professionals
  • Community Support: to provide the community with expert information and education about mood disorders.

Schizophrenia Research Institute

Established in 1996, the Schizophrenia Research Institute (formerly known as the Neuroscience Institute of Schizophrenia and Allied Disorder - NISAD) is a "virtual institute" that brings together neuroscientists and clinical specialists in partnership with patients and families affected by schizophrenia to undertake multidisciplinary research to improve the lives of those affected by the disease.

The Schizophrenia Research Institute conducts research in many areas of neuroscience including neuro-imaging, clinical studies, brain tissue neurobiology and genetics. The Institute's research network encompasses 200 scientists working across many affiliated centres in New South Wales and Australia.

The Schizophrenia Research Laboratory

Launched in 2007, the Schizophrenia Research Laboratory is an Australian-first partnership in schizophrenia research between the Schizophrenia Research Institute, the Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute (POWMRI), University of New South Wales, Macquarie Group Foundation and NSW Health.

The Macquarie Group Foundation Chair for Schizophrenia Research

Based at the Schizophrenia Research Laboratory, the Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute, the Macquarie Group Foundation Chair for Schizophrenia Research, with support from NSW Health, provides scientific leadership in investigating the developmental neurobiology of cognition and behaviour in relation to schizophrenia.

Chair in Epidemiology and Population Health Research

The newly established Chair in Epidemiology and Population Health and associated research program and evidence library is a joint project between the Schizophrenia Research Institute and the University of New South Wales, and NSW Health. The Chair will be based at the Mental Health Unit at St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney and will conduct population based research in relation to schizophrenia.

The Hunter Medical Research Institute

The Hunter Medical Research Institute is a partnership between Hunter New England Area Health Service, the University of Newcastle and the local community and provides a focal point for the coordination of strategy, resources and funding for health and medical research within the Hunter Region.

The Institute's Brain and Mental Health Program draws together more than 160 researchers from the University of Newcastle and Hunter New England Health, who are affiliated with the University's Priority Research Centre for Brain and Mental Health Research.

In 2006, NSW Health established the Neurobehavioural Genetics Unit at the Institute's Brain and Mental Health Program to lead in service delivery, research and development in the field of genetics of psychiatric illness and learning disability.

The Neurobehavioural Genetics Network Research program aims to increase our understanding of the interaction between susceptibility genes for mental illness and stressful events in large populations.
