Foundation Stone Unveiled - Broken Hill

A permanent exhibition of five historical photographs of the original Broken Hill Hospital (circa1941) and the original Foundation Stone were unveiled in a special ceremony held at Broken Hill Health Service today.

NSW Minister for Health, Morris Iemma MP took part in the unveiling while on a regional visit to Broken Hill.

“This is an important opportunity to reflect on the changes that have taken place since the foundation stone was first laid in 1939 and the hospital became operational in 1941,” said Mr Iemma.

Providing Health Services at Broken Hill has always involved overcoming unique geographic obstacles.

This display recognises many of the obstacles that have been associated with developing health services at Broken Hill such as the tyranny of distance and the harsh climate.

“While this foundation stone was first laid some 65 years ago, we continue to build and change health services to meet the needs of local communities.

”The strong partnerships that have been forged with government, non-government organisations, Indigenous groups and community organisations are an example of the determination to provide the best quality health care in this region.

“The State Government is committed to designing and delivering smarter, more flexible services that better meet the needs of people living in rural and remote communities.

“The doctors, nurses and allied health professionals and support staff are the backbone of these rural health services.

“This is an opportunity to celebrate their strong commitment to regional health and local communities,” Mr Iemma said.
