01 December 2005 Membership of Sydney West Area Health Advisory Council
The NSW Minister for Health, John Hatzistergos today announced the appointment of the members of the Sydney West Area Health Advisory Council (AHAC). "The newly appointed AHAC members will provide significant local clinical and community leadership within the health system," Mr Hatzistergos said. Mr Hatzistergos said the formation of local advisory councils was a key strategy in the reform of area health services across the state. "Members have been selected for their understanding of the health challenges facing NSW communities. They bring a unique perspective on the issues confronting their local area," "The Area Health Advisory Council is a crucial part of the State Government's strong and detailed plans to ensure that local communities and clinicians play an integral role in the planning and development of health services," he said. "The Councils will work with the chief executive of each area health service to ensure that clinicians, patients and the community are effectively engaged and consulted. "The Council members will play a crucial role in providing advice on issues such as health service planning and workforce development. "This delivers on the commitment the NSW Government made when the area health service restructure was announced, to increase the level of clinical and community input when addressing the growing demands on the health system," Mr Hatzistergos said. SYDNEY WEST AREA HEALTH ADVISORY COUNCIL MEMBERS Emeritus Professor Peter Castaldi AO is a physician in haematology and general medicine in private practice. Professor Castaldi was previously professor of medicine at the University of Sydney, Associate Dean of the Western Clinical School and Head of Medicine at Westmead Hospital. He worked as a physician at Blacktown and Mt Druitt hospitals and was closely involved in medical appointments and the teaching program at Nepean Hospital in. Professor Castaldi resides in Hunters Hill. Mr Raymond (Jack) Gibson is an Aboriginal member who heads up the Butucarbin community development and education groups in Hebersham. He resides in St Marys. Mrs Helen Walker is manager of Great Community Transport, which provides services to people in the Penrith and Blue Mountains area. She is a member of the former Wentworth Area Health Service Consumer Advisory Committee. Mrs Walker resides in Wentworth Falls. Mr Chris Gardiner has been chief executive officer of Police & Community Clubs NSW since 2002. He is regional director of Central West Catholic Health Care Services (CHCS) and general manager CHCS of Mission Support and Development, Aged Care. Mr Gardiner resides in Hazelbrook. Mrs Rhonda Loftus is District Manager of the Hills Community Health Centre. Mrs Loftus has been a longstanding employee of the community health sector and has a background in social work. She resides in Castle Hill. Dr Hani Bittar is a GP who has worked in western Sydney for the past 12 years. Dr Bittar is a Member of the NSW General Practice Council. He resides in Bella Vista. Dr Michael Price is staff specialist physician at Westmead Hospital. He has been the head of the Geriatric Medicine Department for more than 20 years and advisor on aged care to various area health services. Dr Price is deputy chair of the Australian Health Ministers Advisory Council Clinical Reference Group. He resides in Northwood. Ms Teresa Petric is a clinical team leader in the statewide Trans-Cultural Mental Health Service, based at Cumberland Hospital. She resides in Waterloo. Ms Julie Rich is director of Nursing and Midwifery, Sydney West Area Health Service. She resides in The Hills District. Dr John Pardey is an obstetrician/gynaecologist and visiting medical officer at the Women's and Children's Unit at Nepean Hospital. He resides in Orchard Hills. Mr Stanley Williams is a senior member of the Lithgow Health Council. He resides in Lithgow. Mr Ted Quan is vice chair of the Ethnic Communities Council of NSW. He is a psychologist and was involved in the parliamentary review of mental health services in 2002 and was formerly a health service manager in the state system. Mr Quan resides in Cremorne. Mrs Nahid Khalil has a Diploma in Social Science and is studying for a Master of Social Science. She has experience in working with children with disability and advocacy on behalf of consumers. Mrs Khalil resides in Doonside.
