15 July 2008 Minister inspects progress on Rehabilitation Unit
NSW Health Minister Reba Meagher today inspected construction work on the Rehabilitation Unit being built on the grounds of Ballina District Hospital. Ms Meagher visited Ballina as part of a North Coast visit that included the official opening a new 30-bed medical ward and BreastScreen NSW facility at The Tweed Hospital. In Ballina, Ms Meagher said the new 24-bed Rehabilitation Unit will provide valuable support for patients recovering from surgery or significant medical conditions. "The road to recovery following surgery or illness can be very challenging for patients who need specialised therapy and support as they recover," Ms Meagher said. "This new $5.3 million unit means patients will have access to the rehabilitation support they need within the local community, reducing the need to travel out of the area and allowing patients to remain close to their family support which is also an important part of the recovery process." The Rehabilitation Unit, which is scheduled for completion in November, is located next to an 18-bed Transitional Care Unit which opened last year. "Patients in the Transitional Care Unit are often frail, older people who need additional rehabilitation and support to recover their independence before returning home following surgery or illness," Ms Meagher said. "Staff in the Rehabilitation Unit and Transitional Care Unit will work together to ensure patients recovering from stroke or amputation, or managing conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis have the best possible chance of recovery." Clinical staff working in the Rehabilitation Unit and Transitional Care Unit will include:
Dieticians and a Diabetic Educator will also provide support to the units. For a range of health information, go online to www.health.nsw.gov.au |
