World Youth Day - Public Health Update

NSW Health Acting Deputy Chief Health Officer, Dr Jeremy McAnulty, has this afternoon provided an update on current public health investigations involving World Youth Day pilgrims in Sydney - highlighting two new investigations underway.

"At Our Lady of Good Counsel School in Forestville, five pilgrims have been diagnosed with Influenza with one person having tested positive for Influenza A and one person positive for Influenza B," Dr McAnulty said.

"Public health officers have also been called to Thomas Moore School in Campbelltown where 19 pilgrims have been found to have Influenza with two people testing positive to Influenza B," he said.

Dr McAnulty provided further information on the pilgrims at Gladesville who complained of flu-like symptoms.

"Seven pilgrims staying at Our Lady of the Peace in Gladesville have been diagnosed with Influenza with three people testing positive for Influenza A," Dr McAnulty said.

"At Denistone, the local public health unit continues to investigate an outbreak of gastroenteritis amongst a group of pilgrims staying at St Therese's primary school. A further case has been identified today bringing the total number of pilgrims affected to twenty three," Dr McAnulty said.

In relation to other ongoing public health investigations Dr McAnulty reported there was no additional information since this morning's report.

"There is no further update on the investigation at Oakhill College, Castle Hill. As previously reported 47 pilgrims have been isolated with flu-like symptoms and eight people from this group have tested positive for Influenza B," Dr McAnulty said.

"At Sydney Olympic Park at Homebush, nine pilgrims are suspected to have Influenza - three pilgrims have already tested positive for the Influenza B strain and one pilgrim for Influenza A. There is no further update on this investigation," he said.
