01 October 2008 New Blood Donors needed
First time blood donors and those who haven't seen the inside of a blood bank for a long time are being asked for their help, this weekend, to overcome a shortage of blood supplies. NSW Chief Health Officer, Professor Jim Bishop, is asking healthy community minded people to consider giving blood this Saturday. "In NSW, we currently have around five days supply of the crucial O group blood stores. Ideally we want 10 days supply," said Professor Bishop. "While all blood groups are important group O is the most compatible blood type, particularly O negative, which is universally compatible with all other types. "Regular blood donors are a hardy bunch, but this winter's flu season has limited the numbers of people able to give blood. "Our frequent donors can't re-donate for another few weeks, so this weekend we others to give us a helping hand." Professor Bishop says new blood donors are needed to ensure hospitals and clinics across the State have enough blood and blood products to help people in need. "The supply of blood is always a very limited and precious resource, the national stores of blood could be replenished very quickly with the assistance of more blood donors over the weekend." "Donating blood is a simple and generous act, which can help save the life of a seriously ill person," Professor Bishop said. The Australian Red Cross Blood Service has blood donation centres open this Saturday with major blood banks operating between 8am to 3pm.
