Minister praises hospital volunteers at 75th anniversary
NSW Minister for Health, John Della Bosca has attended the United Hospital Auxiliaries 75th Annual Conference today and praised the thousands of volunteers who selflessly donate their time and expertise across the NSW health system.
“Volunteers make a significant difference to the lives of patients, their families and NSW Health staff,” Mr Della Bosca said.
“The Rees Government values the contribution of volunteers in our hospitals and we look forward to a continued association well into the future,” he said.
Mr Della Bosca presented trophies to volunteers in recognition of their services at a special ceremony at Parliament House and said health volunteers had fundraised over $20 million across NSW in the past three years.
“Their contribution has helped local hospitals purchase extra pieces of equipment for patient care and comfort,” Mr Della Bosca said.
“The important roles of volunteers in the NSW Health system are interesting and diverse.
“Auxiliary groups, palliative care counselling, fund raising, serving meals to patients, clerical work and garden maintenance are just some of the rewarding jobs that volunteers undertake.
“The work of the United Hospital Auxiliaries of NSW is testimony to the strength of NSW health volunteers,” he said.
“Our volunteers add something special to our health facilities and every one of our volunteers has a special reason for giving.
“They don’t ask for anything in return but recognition goes a long way. We are proud to celebrate 75 years of dedication from the United Hospital Auxiliaries and let our volunteers know how much we value them,” Mr Della Bosca said.
A total of 6,399 volunteers associated with the United Hospital Auxiliaries fundraised more than $7.5 million in 2006/07 and contributed in excess of 1.5 million hours to help raise funds and provide ongoing support to patients and their visitors in public hospitals throughout NSW.
