Registered Nurse
To become a Registered Nurse you will need to complete a Bachelor of Nursing at university. Bachelor of Nursing courses generally requires three years full-time study or the equivalent part-time. To apply for these courses, you need to have completed your HSC with the required subjects and an appropr iate Universities Admission Index (UAI) or equivalent.
If you don’t have your HSC then you will need to talk directly to the university about other entry pathways such as Tertiary Preparation Courses (TPC) and Special Tertiary Admissions Tests (STAT).
Check with the Universities Admissions Centre for each university’s entry prerequisites. You can also check with each university that offers a nursing degree. Most require you to have studied english, mathematics and at least one science subject as part of your HSC. In some cases, you may also need a First Aid Certificate.
Universities hold Open Days each year where you can go and check out the campuses, the faculties and talk to the staff about the nursing courses on offer.
If you are already an Enrolled Nurse, you can apply directly to university and can be granted up to 12 months credit in the degree program. This way, it is possible to complete your nursing degree in only two years.
Midwifery
If you want to become a Midwife there are two ways to achieve this. One is by completing a Bachelor of Midwifery at university, which requires you to have completed your HSC (with the required subjects) and to have an appropriate Universities Admission Index (UAI) or equivalent. The university undergraduate course incorporates midwifery theory, science and clinical practice and will see you taking part in practical experience within the first few weeks of the course. Check with the University Admissions Centre for details.
Alternatively, you may decide to complete a Bachelor of Nursing at university and then undertake a postgraduate midwifery course. For this option, you need to secure employment in an accredited midwifery unit and, at the same time, enrol at a university that provides postgraduate midwifery education.
