Aboriginal Undergraduate Nursing and Midwifery Cadetships

The aim of the NSW Aboriginal Nursing and Midwifery Undergraduate Cadetships is to give Aboriginal people the opportunity to undertake undergraduate nursing or midwifery courses while employed in a public hospital in NSW.

Aboriginal people can apply for the cadetships if they are enrolled in a nursing or midwifery course on a full-time basis at an approved university.

Once cadets have successfully completed their degree, they are then offered ongoing employment in a public hospital that they have been employed with while studying.

The cadetship is divided into 3 parts:

  • Study Component - cadets will receive a study allowance from the employer on a fortnightly basis for the academic year (40 weeks at $600 per week).
  • Work Placement - for 12-weeks of the long academic break (11 weeks work and 1 weeks annual leave) cadets will be working on a temporary basis in a public hospital.
  • Offer of Employment - at the completion of their course and once registered with the Nurses and Midwives Board, permanent employment is offered to the cadet. There are currently limited cadetship positions.

Structured Training and Employment Program (STEP) for Aboriginal Trainee Enrolled Nurses

The aim of the STEP is to provide support to Aboriginal Trainee Enrolled Nurses. Ongoing employment at the completion of the Enrolled Nursing Course is availble.

The Department of Workplace Relations provides financial assistance to hospitals that employ Aboriginal Trainee Enrolled Nurses.

Funding can be used for:

  • Tutorial support
  • Case management
  • Books and equipment
  • Mentoring support
  • Professional development opportunities

Preparation Program for Aboriginal people to apply for the Enrolled Nursing Course

In order to increase the number of Aboriginal people applying for the Enrolled Nursing Course, a specific preparation program has been developed which helps Aboriginal people meet the selection criteria of the course.

This program has been developed in liaison with Aboriginal Education and Training Units in NSW TAFE's, Aboriginal Employment Co-ordinators, Enrolled Nurse Co-ordinators in Area Health Services and local Aboriginal Employment Organisations.

Depending on numbers, these courses can be offered all over NSW.

The preparation course helps prepare you to apply for the Enrolled Nursing Course. The subjects covered in the preparation course include first aid, writing an application letter and CV, selection requirements, interview preparation, basic computing and literacy and numeracy skills.
