2007 Innovations Showcase - 12 November 2007

Adjunct Professor Debra Thoms, Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer NSW, opened the day, describing the Innovations Showcase as an opportunity to share information and to promote the growth and development of Nursing and Midwifery. Attendees were advised that the Second Models of Care Report will be released in the new year and will be available on the Nursing and Midwifery Office website and in hard copy. This Report, together with the work of the Modelling Care Reference Group will spread innovation and information across the State, promoting and supporting sustainability and the spread of innovative practice.

Professor Mary Chiarella, NSW Health/UTS spoke about the Models of Care Roadshow and how this highlighted that little funding was available to provide the opportunity to review practice. This resulted in NSW Health, Nursing and Midwifery Office in providing 9 Innovation Scholarships in 2006.

The second stage of the Models of Care Project included workshops and seminars throughout 2006. A further 19 Innovation Scholarships were provided in 2007 with 10 of these for Mental Health projects.

The third stage established the Statewide Modelling of Care Reference Group, comprising a membership from nominations from all Area Health Services and Universities. 5 sub-groups were developed from this membership and resulted in the development of direction papers and a collaborative action plan. The work in 2007 resulted in a comprehensive evaluation strategy, ratification of the Action Plan and the establishment of four distinct project working groups.

The four projects are communication strategies, identification and development of support initiatives, publication of nursing and midwifery work in a special issue of Contemporary Nurse journal and evaluation. These projects have the commitment of the Senior Nursing and Midwifery Leadership Collaborative and compass the 5 'S's.

  • Sustainability
  • Synergy
  • Synchronicity
  • Spread
  • Self belief

The Innovations Showcase recognised the value of such work and marked the 4th and next stage of the Modelling Care Project.

2005 Roadshow

In 2002 a Joint Strategic Reference Group was established to provide a forum for addressing issues concerning nursing and midwifery in New South Wales. One of the key priorities identified by this group was to undertake a major review of nursing models of care and the role of nurses.

The review resulted in a State-wide Roadshow held between February and April 2005 showcasing innovative nursing models of care. The Roadshow also engaged the nursing profession in debate around the way in which nursing and midwifery care is practised and delivered and the current and future roles of nurses and midwives. Click HERE to view a copy of the First Report on the Models of Care Project.

In addition to presentations on workforce modelling by the Chief Nursing Officer and a review of literature pertaining to models of care and nurses' roles by Professor Mary Chiarella, former Chief Nursing Officer, thirty nine different groups of nurses presented their work. Links to these presentations can be found below.
