Practice Development: Justice Health
The Justice Health Nursing Professorial Unit works towards supporting the development of a practice development culture within Justice Health. A key element is the work with the Justice Health Nurse Professional Council and the Justice Health CNC network.
Current practice development projects include the Long Bay Hospital project and the disability support study.
The Long Bay Hospital project
This project combines an ethnographic study and a structured practice improvement program. The ethnographic study was used to understand the nursing culture in the hospital and allow the detection of cultural migration over a 12-month period in which a structured practice improvement programme lead by the CNCs took place. The study is in the final stages of analysis and reporting.
The disability support study
This study combines a range of projects that focus on supporting incarcerated people who have a less than typical cognitive processing style or intellectual disability. This has included the conduct and evaluation of a remedial Hepatitis C harm minimisation programme conducted at Goulburn Correctional Centre High Support Unit and a review of the profile of inmates from the 2001 inmate health survey, the results of which were published in the International Journal of Prisoner Health.
A project is being developed in partnership with the Department of Corrective Services Disability Support Manager to study the experience of incarceration for people with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. The unit works toward the translation of the outcomes of the projects into practice development through the CNC network.
