Practice Development

Practice Development School | Research | Models of care

Practice development is gaining momentum very quickly in NSW as clinicians come to appreciate the value of using a systematic approach to delivering person-centred care that encompasses the needs of patients, families and staff.

Person-centred care incorporates the practice development principles of inclusiveness, respect for each other, valuing individual contributions and connecting.

These principles take us back to the basic values of nursing and midwifery and refocus us on the reason why many of us came into the profession.

NSW and Australia has a growing number of practice developers and dedicated departments within Area Health Services (AHS) that are facilitating practice development work, researching concepts within practice development and evaluating effectiveness of practice development strategies.

This is a central introductory point for NSW health professionals to access information and resources relevant to practice development.

'Practice development is a continuous process of developing person-centred cultures. It is enabled by facilitators who work with teams to blend personal qualities and creative imagination with practice skills, practice wisdom and an evolving authentic self. Learning through engagement with body, heart, mind and soul brings about transformations of self and work practices. This is sustained by embedding both processes and outcomes in corporate strategy'.
