Re-entry to midwifery scholarships

If you're a previously registered midwife, our re-entry to midwifery scholarships help you to re-enter practice in the NSW public health system through supervised practice. These scholarships are linked to subsequent employment and paid to the local health district/specialty network (LHD/SN) to support your supervised practice.

Up to $10,000 is available to the LHD/SN for each applicant.

If you want to re-enter practice as a midwife, you have to meet the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). This may include a period of supervised practice.

If the NMBA has granted provisional registration (with conditions), you may be employed during this time.

Eligibility

• be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
• have a letter from the NMBA saying that you need to take an NMBA approved re-entry to practice pathway
• have previous relevant clinical midwifery experience
• agree to employment in a permanent full or part time position in the NSW public health system for a period of two years (minimum 16 hours per week)
• meet NSW Health pre-employment screening checks

The LHD/SN must also have a suitable position that's available and identified

Application

• Once you have a formal letter of advice from the NMBA regarding the need to do supervised practice, contact the nursing and midwifery workforce manager in the LHD/SN where you would like to be employed to discuss employment opportunities.
• If an opportunity exists, and you accept an offer of employment as per the conditions above, the LHD/SN will contact the Nursing and Midwifery Office to progress your application.
