2009 Postgraduate Nursing and Midwifery Scholarships

Category 1 - Midwifery | Category 2 - Mental Health | Category 3 – Clinical Studies | Category 4 – Education | Category 5 – Management

The NSW Nursing and Midwifery Scholarship Fund provides postgraduate scholarships to support the recruitment and retention of nurses and midwives within the NSW public health system.

Scholarships are available in 2009 to eligible permanent full time or part time registered nurses or registered midwives employed and currently working in NSW public health.  The scholarships are to assist with educational expenses directly associated with postgraduate study.  

The number of scholarships allocated is subject to total funds available within the 2009 postgraduate scholarship budget. Applicants will be subject to cull, based on scholarship criteria.  Successful applicants will receive $1,000 per subject, to a maximum of $8,000.

Note: applicants who do not provide all required documentation at the time of application will be deemed ineligible for a scholarship. The only exception to this is the enrolment confirmation which must be provided as soon as possible so that the application can be progressed.

Applications open December 2008 and close on 28 February 2009. 

Applications must be received in the Nursing and Midwifery Office by the closing date.  Late applications will not be considered.

Category 3 - Clinical Studies

Category 4 - Education

Category 5 - Management

Category 1 - Midwifery

Essential Criteria

Applicants must provide evidence of current employment in a permanent full time or part time position as a registered nurse or student midwife within with in the NSW public health system and, undertaking postgraduate tertiary study in 2009 leading to registration as a midwife in NSW.

Category 2 - Mental Health

Essential Criteria

Applicants must provide evidence of

  • Current employment in a permanent full time or part time position as a registered nurse in a designated mental health role within the NSW public health system.
  • Enrolled in an Australian postgraduate course in 2009 at graduate certificate level or above that is accredited under the NSW Higher Education Act (2001) or equivalent that leads to an accredited tertiary qualification.
  • Describe in no more than 250 words how the qualification being studied will make a positive contribution to your current role and workplace.

The course being studied must relate to your current role.

Category 3 - Clinical Studies

Essential Criteria

Applicants must provide evidence of

  • Current employment in a permanent full time or part time position as a registered nurse/midwife within the NSW public health system.
  • Have been working for at least one (1) year in the speciality in which the tertiary study is being undertaken.
  • Be enrolled in an Australian postgraduate course in 2009 at graduate certificate level or above that is accredited under the NSW Higher Education Act (2001) or equivalent that leads to an accredited tertiary qualification.
  • Describe in no more than 250 words how the qualification being studied will make a positive contribution to your current role and workplace.

The course being studied must relate to your current role or the role being sought.

Note: clinical studies may include patient education e.g. Diabetic Education.

Category 4 - Education

Essential Criteria

Applicants must provide evidence of

  • Currently employment in a permanent full time or part time position as a registered nurse/midwife within the NSW public health system.
  • Be enrolled in an Australian postgraduate course in 2009 at graduate certificate level or above that is accredited under the NSW Higher Education Act (2001) or equivalent that leads to an accredited tertiary qualification.
  • Provide a list of education programs/activities that you have developed and/or delivered in the past (18) eighteen months that demonstrates clinical expertise and commitment to nursing/midwifery education in their current role.

Funding Priorities for a Category 4 scholarship include

  • Current appoint to or employment in an acting position as a registered nurse/midwifery educator or clinical educator without prior tertiary education qualifications.
  • Currently employed or employed in an acting position for a minimum of 3 months as a nurse/midwifery educator or clinical educator seeking to upgrade an existing qualification to a Masters level.
  • Not yet employed for more than 12 months as an educator.

Category 5 - Management

Essential Criteria

Applicants must provide evidence of

  • Currently employment in a permanent full time or part time position as a registered nurse/midwife within the NSW public health system.
  • Be enrolled in an Australian postgraduate course in 2009 at graduate certificate level or above that is accredited under the NSW Higher Education Act (2001) or equivalent that leads to an accredited tertiary qualification.
  • Describe in no more than 250 words how the qualification being studied will make a positive contribution to your current role and workplace.

Funding Priorities for a Category 5 scholarship include

  • Current appointed as or acting in a nursing/midwifery management position for a minimum of 3 months in a role without prior tertiary management qualifications.
  • Current appointed as or acting in a nursing/midwifery management position for a minimum of 3 months and seeking to upgrade an existing tertiary qualification to Masters Level.
  • Current appointed as or acting in a nursing/midwifery management position with at least five years experience in nursing/midwifery.
