NSW Health and Medical Research Strategic Review
Health and medical research are critical activities of the NSW public health system that support the delivery of better treatments and technologies to improve patient care and better preventive efforts to improve the health of the community.
As part of the Better Patient Care: Boost for Medical Research 2011 election policy, the NSW Government committed to review the current performance of health and medical research in NSW and recommend a strategic plan for the next ten years.
I am honoured to lead this Review. It provides a great opportunity to identify how NSW can position itself as an important contributor to the international health and medical research sector. The Review will include consultation with the health, research and business sectors, as well as the wider community, to develop a 10-year strategic health and medical research plan for NSW.
The Review will assess the current performance of health and medical research in NSW, make recommendations on how the sector can be improved, better coordinated and leveraged; and propose ways in which the NSW health needs, clinical trials and commercialisation capacity can be better supported or expanded.
In the conduct of the Review, I will be supported by a Health and Medical Research Strategic Review Committee which draws together expertise from research, business, health, science and philanthropic sectors. A series of roundtables and interviews will be held with key stakeholders over the coming weeks and public submissions to the Review will open shortly.
