Health Services Performance Improvement

"Improving clinical processes so we can deliver better patient journeys"

The Health Services Performance Improvement Branch (HSPIB) commenced in 2004 to assist with clinical performance improvement across NSW Health.

In 2005, NSW Health received funding to implement a State-wide clinical process improvement program known as Clinical Services Redesign.  “Redesign” also sits under HSPIB and provides a way for health staff to improve access to care and improve patient experiences.

HSPIB is now approaching its 5th year of operation with efforts being directed towards implementation and sustainability of its programs.

As part of the continuing efforts to improve system performance, and under the direction of the Director-General, HSPIB has developed and implemented a Performance Management Framework.

HSPIB, through Redesign, has so far successfully implemented over 85 projects across the 8 areas that were creating the most stress on the health system.

These areas include:

  • Surgery
  • Cardiology
  • Acute Care
  • Emergency
  • Integrated Aged and Chronic Care
  • Patient Flow
  • Mental Health
  • Performance Management

These eight areas are covered within our branch portfolios – SurgeryOut of Hospital CarePatient FlowPatient and Carer ExperiencePerformance Management and Redesign.
