Redesign

"Building Capability"

Clinical Services Redesign – also known as 'Redesign' – provides a way for health staff to improve patient experiences and access to care. It is a state-wide clinical process improvement program that is part of the strategy to transform the NSW health system.

We have set out to achieve this by focusing on:

  • Process improvement – we’re changing the way we do things to improve processes and deliver better patient journeys
  • Capacity building – we’re providing staff with the skills to undertake improvement projects at the local level
  • Business processes – we’re applying Redesign principles to build capability in Finance and Business Program Mangement domains

Redesign Methodology

Redesign Methodology

Process Improvement

The Redesign process improvement methodology has been proven to work in NSW Health. Over 116 Redesign projects have been completed in eight areas that were creating the most stress on the health system. These include:

  • Surgery
  • Cardiology
  • Acute Care
  • Emergency
  • Aged and Chronic Care
  • Patient Flow
  • Mental Health

Performance Management

Performance Management Redesign projects have resulted in new ways of delivering better care for patients and carers. Eighteen best practice models of care have been captured and promoted. New approaches to delivering care have been designed including:

  • Fast track zones
  • Medical assessment units
  • Patient flow units
  • Hospital avoidance initiatives

Evaluation of Clinical Services Redesign Program

NSW Health commissioned two separate external evaluations for phase 1 of the Clinical Services Redesign Program (CSRP) 2005-2008. The final evaluation reports and the NSW Health response have now been published.

A report on the 2009/10 CSRP achievements is also available for view.
