Area Health Advisory Councils

Area Health Advisory Councils

As part of the reforms to the health administration in NSW in 2004, Area Health Boards which previously had executive governance responsibilities were abolished. Area Health Advisory Councils (AHACs) were established in each of the eight Area Health Services and the Children's Hospital Advisory Council (CHAC) for The Children's Hospital at Westmead, as required under the Health Services Act 1997.

Each Area Health Advisory Council is required to consist of between 9 and 13 members appointed by the Minister, subject to review by Cabinet. Membership is comprised of persons having experience in the provision of health services and persons who can represent the interests of consumers of health services and the local community. At least one member must be a person who has expertise, knowledge or experience in realtion to Aboriginal Health.

The Area Health Advisory Councils and the Childrens Health Advisory Council facilitate the involvement of health service providers, consumers and community members in the development of the Area Health Services' policies, plans and initiatives. The role and functions of the Area Health Advisory Councils are set out in the Health Services Act 1997, Sections 27 and 28.

The Health Advisory Councils are:

  • Children's Hospital Advisory Council
  • Greater Southern Area Health Advisory Council
  • Greater Western Area Health Advisory Council
  • Hunter New England Area Health Advisory Council
  • North Coast Area Health Advisory Council
  • Northern Sydney Central Coast Area Health Advisory Council
  • South Eastern Sydney Illawarra Area Health Advisory Council
  • Sydney South West Area Health Advisory Council
  • Sydney West Area Health Advisory Council
