NSW population
Health Area population pyramid

Note: Population estimates as at 30 June each year. Where a bar does not have a segment for 2025, the number of people in that category is predicted to decrease by 2025. The predicted number is shown as a lighter coloured line on the overlying 2005 bar. Population components may not add exactly due to rounding.

The 2005 and 2025 population pyramids for Sydney South West, Sydney West, Northern Sydney & Central Coast and South Eastern Sydney & Illawarra Health Areas, display similar shapes. All show an expected total population increase by 2025, with the largest growth occurring in the older age groups. In 2005, the 30-34 year age group comprised the largest proportion of the total population for Sydney South West, South Eastern Sydney & Illawarra, and Sydney West Health Areas, and the 40-44 year age group comprised the largest proportion of the total population in Northern Sydney and Central Coast Health Areas. By 2025, the 30-34 year age group will comprise the largest proportion of the population in Sydney South West and South Eastern Sydney & Illawarra Health Areas the 35-39 year age group will comprise the largest proportion of the total population in Sydney West Health Area, and the 40-44 year age group will comprise the largest proportion of the total population in Northern Sydney & Central Coast Health Areas. In some of these health areas, there will be a slight decrease in the youngest age groups. In particular, the 0-4 year age group, 5-9 year age group and 10-14 year age group is expected to decrease slightly in Northern Sydney & Central Coast Health Area by 2025. In South Eastern Sydney & Illawarra Health Area, the 5-9 year age group, 10-14 year age group, and 15-19 year age group is expected to decrease slightly by 2025.

The 2005 population pyramids for Greater Western, North Coast, Hunter & New England and Greater Southern Health Areas display peaks at both 10-14 year age groups and 40-49 year age groups. By 2025, the total population for these health areas is expected to increase, with the growth occurring in the older age groups. The population of most of the younger age groups is expected to decline. In 2025, the 60-64 year age group will comprise the largest proportion of the total population for Greater Western, Hunter & New England and Greater Southern Health Areas. In 2025, the 65-69 year age group will comprise the largest proportion of the total population for the North Coast Health Area.
