How to read PDF files

Introduction to PDF files

Portable Document Format (PDF) files, which are also sometimes known as "Acrobat" files, provide a method of publishing high quality electronic images or replicas of printed pages in a form which can be accessed on many different types of computers.

The most satisfactory method of reading PDF files is to use the free Acrobat Reader software provided by Adobe Inc. This software is available in versions which run on Windows (all versions), Apple Macintosh (all versions), Linux and some Unix systems. The most recent versions of this software are available from this page on the the Adobe Systems Web site and if you have access to the Internet we recommend that you download the free Acrobat Reader software from there.

However, if you do not have an Internet connection (for instance if you are accessing this page via the NSW Health intranet or from a CD-ROM), you can download versions of the free Acrobat Reader software for Windows 3.1, Windows 95/98/NT/2000, Apple Macintosh and Linux operating systems from the links below on this page. For blind and sight-impaired readers, Acrobat Access software for Windows 95/98/NT/2000 is also available for download from this page.

If you would prefer to use free, open source software to view the PDF files available in the online Report of the New South Wales Chief Health Officer, we recommend either GhostScript (with the GSview or Ghostview user interfaces) or Xpdf. Please note that although both of these programmes (GhostScript/GSview/Ghostview and Xpdf) work well with the PDF files of individual pages of the HTML version of the Report, they do not work properly with the PDF version of the printed Report due to some incompatibility with the PostScript graphs which appear on most pages of the report. If you wish to read or print the PDF version of the printed Report, we recommend that you use the free but closed source Adobe Acrobat reader software rather than one of the free, open source alternatives.

Installation instructions

Windows operating systems

After the download is complete:

1. Double-click the newly downloaded file.
2. Follow the instructions on your screen.

If there is a failure at any point during the installation of Acrobat Reader, the installer performs a complete uninstall. For this reason, it is important not to close the installer application by clicking its close box in the upper right corner of the background window after clicking the "Thank You" dialog box that appears at the end of the installation. If you wait for a second or two, the installer will automatically close the background windows after the installation is complete.

Apple Macintosh computers

After the download is complete:

1.The file you download will be expanded to a self-extracting archive. If your Web browser isn't configured to automatically launch an application such as StuffIt Expander(TM) to expand .hqx or .bin files (which is available as a freeware product and is distributed with Netscape(TM) Navigator(TM) 3.0 or later ), you'll need to manually launch an application to expand the downloaded file to produce Reader 4.05 Installer.
2.Double-click the file. (Note: This will cause all current Mac applications to quit.)
3.Follow the instructions on your screen.

Linux operating systems

After the download is complete:

1.Double-click the newly downloaded .tar file.
2.Uncompress or gunzip the file.
3.Untar the file and read the text file for installation steps.

The Access plug-in supplements the standard Acrobat and Reader display of PDF documents with an alternative view that supports screen-reading applications for Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT. This view presents the textual content of a PDF file in a separate window. The window contains the text in an approximated reading order. Standard Acrobat features, such as hypertext links, notes, bookmarks, sounds, and movies, are available in the Access view.

System Requirements
Intel 486 or better personal computer, Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT 4.0, 4 MB of application RAM, 3 MB of hard disk space, plus 2 MB of additional space during installation, Acrobat 4.05 or Acrobat Reader 4.05. Acrobat 4.05 and Acrobat Reader 4.05 have a default preference setting for "Certified plug-ins only."
