Macleay Hastings Safe Communties

In the centre of the Mid North Coast Area Health Service lies Kempsey (the "Macleay") and Hastings Local Government Areas (LGAs). The Project Advisory Committee for Macleay Hastings Safe Communities currently consists of:

  • Kempsey Shire Council
  • Hastings Council
  • RTA Northern Region
  • NSW Police Mid North Coast Local Area Command
  • NSW Attorney General’s Dept – Violence Against Women Specialist Unit
  • Port Macquarie Division of General Practice
  • Durri Aboriginal Medical Service
  • Department of Community Services
  • Department of Education and Training
  • Mid North Coast Area Health Service, Population Health Unit and Community Health (Central Sector)

According to the health information for Macleay Hastings, some prominent issues emerge. They include:

  • Road safety / pedestrian safety
  • Crime prevention
  • Falls in the elderly (community and/or institutions)
  • Drugs and alcohol (and its links with road accidents, violence)
  • Violence
  • Suicide
  • Sports injuries

The focus of Macleay Hastings Safe Communities is the development of sustainable partnerships and the involvement and ownership of the project by the communities.

The communities will determine the injury prevention and community safety initiatives that are important to them. The Project Advisory Committee and other partners are responsible for enabling this process. At this stage in the program’s development, it would be inconsistent with the philosophy of a safe communities project to be prescriptive about priorities.

To do so may indeed hamper the long term success of the program as only a genuine commitment to local consultation and collaboration will ensure its sustainability.
